The Lancaster Family History Group's Expanded Programme for March 2009 - February 2010

The Lancaster Family History Group normally meet at the Barton Road Community Centre, Barton Road, Lancaster on the first Wednesday of every month. All regular monthly meetings (Dates in blue) commence at 7.30pm prompt. Doors open at 7.00pm. Entrance is free to members. Tea and biscuits are available. New members and visitors welcome.

Workshops (Dates in green) are also held at the Barton Road Community Centre, see the programme text for times.

All other events (Dates in red) are held at outside locations, see the programme text for venues and times.

Discover that families in the past exhibited a high degree of geographic mobility. They were not just passive stay-at-homes but sought opportunities or moved due to a variety of circumstances.

Gordon  Read: Seafarers, Sea Captains & Seawomen

An exploration of the occupations and industry of seafaring and an unusual aspect of Womens’ History.

Gordon Read was the founder of the Maritime Archives at the Liverpool Maritime Museum

Guided tour of Lancaster (Far Moor) Cemetery: with Roger Frankland of the Lancaster Civic Society.

Meet at the Cemetery gates on Quernmore Road at 7pm to discover how the resting places and memorials of long gone Lancastrians can illuminate Family History.

Peter Park: On the Parish: Poor Laws and Family History

These affected all classes in society whether as a recipient of Poor Relief or as a payer of the Poor Rates and the administration of the Poor law created a wealth of records full of clues for Family Historians.

A Hotpot supper, catering by Julia Stevenson.
